I told my mother today, who is serving an LDS mission in Adam-ondi-Ahman, that social meeting was spreading the messages from conference faster than anything else ever could.
My mom's response...What is social media?
The discussion began. My mother ended the conversation with, "I prefer snail mail and having something that I can hold." I began to argue that you could print it from there if you needed it, you could access it anywhere, and then decided that her opinion was not going to change.
I am currently planning the Talbot/Nielson reunion in June. I know a few of the brothers kids and there families and one of the sisters. I do not have contact for all of them. I do not know any of the other sisters families and wouldn't know them if I came face to face with them.
My main communication with the ones I do know is facebook. So I started last night sending messages to everyone for their e-mail addresses and the addresses of anyone else in the family they might have. Today I started receiving messages back. I started searching everyone's friends lists and found the names of people that I remember hearing the family talk about from the other family. Within an hour one of them had responded and is going to help me get in touch with everyone from their family.
Really? I typed for 2 seconds and made contact with people that would have taken days on the phone if we had to play phone tag, and days or weeks, if I would have used snail mail.
I wish that I could help my mom understand the convenience of using technology. Standard mail serves a purpose, although I don't use it much. I love the time that I able to save and the added communication I have with extended family through social media and technology! I guess I am a pretty impatient person so without it who knows where I would be. Probably crazier than I already am!
